Located on the Colorado River and just under 25 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, Lake Mead is perhaps the most well known man-made reservoir in the United States. The lake was a by-product of the Hoover Dam construction project in the 1930s and was named after U.S. Commissioner Elwood Mead. Today the lake is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Visiting Lake Mead is an incomparable experience where you can view the spectacular landscapes of endless rose-colored mountains and vibrant blue waters.
Lake Mead is America’s first National Recreation Area. Outdoor activities include swimming, camping, fishing and hiking on the beautiful trails that span miles of undisturbed land. Although all areas of the lake are considered a destination, Lake Mead has several popular points of interest. Black Canyon is one of the newer water trails where visitors can kayak, canoe, or even raft their way through the canyon. The canyon features wondrous caves for exploring, along with several hot springs! Overton Arm is located on the north side of Lake Mead. This area is often inhabited by America's national bird, the Bald Eagle. The Bald Eagle spends the winter months at Lake Mead and can be seen by visitors, if you're patient enough.
Bolder Basin is the closest region of Lake Mead, highly popularized due to its proximity to neighboring Boulder City. At the Basin sits the visitor center, historic trails, and the Lake Mead Marina and Callville Bay Harbor that provides boating and camping trips. Lake Mohave is another beautiful destination at the Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Here you’ll find the Cottonwood Cove Resort and Katherine Landing Resort. These resorts rent houseboats and small watercrafts. Other attractions on Lake Mead include but are not limited to St. Thomas Townsite, Rogers and Blue Springs, Temple Bar Resort, South Cove, and Redstone picnic area.
If you'd like to enjoy Lake Mead year-round, there are many housing options nearby. Homes in Boulder City have extravagant views of Lake Mead and are just a few miles west of the lake. Newly constructed homes and vacant land are both readily available.
